5 Day Round Trip
From Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca offers a great starting point for sightseeing in Transylvania. We have a suggestion for a trip, which can be completed in 3-7 days, depending on how many stops you want to make on the way.

Day 1: Cluj-Napoca
Cluj-Napoca (or just Cluj) is Romania’s second biggest city, with a charming old city centre, a young vibe and a wide selection of excellent restaurants, caffes and bars. Make sure to visit the Saint Michael Church, the Pharmacy Museum, and the city’s many parks.
A short trip from Cluj-Napoca you can visit the impressive Turda Salt Mine or go for a hike in the beautiful Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii), that offers hikes of 2-3 hours or 4-5+ hours.
Day 2-3: Sibiu, Brașov
Sibiu was the largest and wealthiest of the seven walled citadels founded in the 12th century by German settlers.
The pedestrian-friendly old town still retains both its grandeur and charm, offering a great base for discovering the area.
We highly recommend visiting Muzeul Astra, an open air village museum, that shows the richness and variety of Romanian village building tradition, as well as preserving and showcasing crafts such as pottery, thatching, weaving, painting, and more.
From Sibiu it is possible to do a daytrip to the area surrounding the Moldoveanu Peak, the highest mountain in Romania. It is also possible to hike to the top, but this requires some planning 🙂
Brașov is worth a longer visit in itself. But if you are short on time, we recommend just stopping here for coffee or lunch and a stroll through the old centre. If you have more time, you can spend a day here and even visit Bran Castle (Dragula’s Castle), but we have to warn you – it is quite touristy.
Day 4-5: Viscri, Sighișoara, Biertan
Viscri, Sighișoara and Biertan can all be visited in one day, but we highly recommend spending a bit more time to fully take in all the beautiful and historical sites.
Viscri is a Saxon village known for its UNESCO fortified church and for being a favourite place of King Charles of England, who owns several houses here. It is a great place to slow down, enjoy some traditional food and experience village life.
Sighișoara is one of the best-preserved fortified medieval towns in Europe. The citadel was build in the 12th-century by Saxons and is today a UNESCO Heritage site. It is a great place to stay while you explore the area, as it has a wider selection of accomodation and restaurants than the villages.
Charming rural landscapes and vineyards surround the small village of Biertan, where cute old houses in different colors line the streets. At the hilltop an old fortified church overlooks the village. It is one of the largest and most impressive medieval strongholds in Transylvania, and is also a UNESCO Heritage site.
